子贡回答说,我们的老师孔子,温(性格温和,不极端),良(生性善良,不存恶念),恭(恭敬谦虚慎重),俭(知道什么事重要,只肯把自己的金钱时间精力花费在重要的事情上),让(有了好处绝不自居,有了难处绝不苟免)。他正是因为有了这些品德,才得到这些消息的呀。就算是他有所希求,与其它人的希求也不会是一样的。其它人或许会求名求利,我们的老师不会的。

孔子说,父亲在的时候,很多人是处于无奈才会恭敬父亲,心里却没有恭敬之意,这样是不行的,因此,我们应该看他的态度是否对父亲孝敬;父亲不在的时候,没人监督你了,是不是就可以自我放逐没有章法了,不是的,父亲的教导,还有孝道依旧不可荒废,我们要看他的行为,是不是跟父亲在的时候是一样的。父母不在身边的三年,都要与父母在时是一样的。如果做到这样了,就真的可以称为是孝子了。

子贡说,哇,我想起来,诗经上有一句“如切如磋,如琢如磨”,今天跟老师的谈话,不正是这样吗?(意思是,人的学问与玉器的加工是一样的,玉石的切磋是粗加工,就像老师起初的教导,玉石的琢磨是细加工,需要自己不断地反省,结合实际,才能让知识真正的成为自己的一部分。)
孔子说,子贡啊,我现在总算可以跟你谈论《诗》了,不拘泥于文字和我的教导,有自己的见解,很好。
